How to Search WhatsApp by Sender Name or Number

Need to search for messages in a WhatsApp group from a specific sender name or number? This tutorial will show you how.

WhatsApp groups can grow to be super complex, with thousands of messages by many users. Sometimes, you just know that it was something Frank posted, around April – but how do you find Frank’s messages without all the clutter?

WhatsApp does not provide an option to search by user (and other search capabilities are unfortunately lacking, as well). Fortunately, there is a better way – using WHAMetrics.

Once a group is added to WHAMetrics, you can search the messages in that group by sender, by keyword, by date and many other parameters. Messages from Frank in April? Here they are!

How to Search WhatsApp Group Messages by Sender Name

1. Log in to the WHAMetrics console.
2. On the Groups tab, add the WhatsApp group you want to search in. You can do that simply by adding the WHAMetrics number to be a member of that group.
3. On the Messages tab, select the group. You will see the messages at the bottom of the screen.
4. Now, simply type what you want to search for into the filter box at the top of the “Messages” list at the bottom
5. You can search WhatsApp message text, sender name, date, sender number – or any combination of those.
6. You can even filter WhatsApp messages by what they don’t include, search for message that include two different words and many more advanced combinations.

Can I search deleted WhatsApp messages?

Yes. Since WHAMetrics keeps a backup of your messages, you can even search messages that have since been deleted!

Can I search WhatsApp by number instead of by name?

Yes, you can. Simply enter the number you want (or part of a number) above the “Phone” column, to search for all messages from that number.
